Pomegranate oil
Pomegranate seed oil is a light golden oil with a faint, fruity scent. It’s one of my all-time favourite ingredients, and one of the most antioxidant-rich oils we work with. Its unusual fatty acid profile makes it quite different from many of the more familiar plant oils used in skincare.
What is pomegranate seed oil?
Pomegranate seed oil is pressed from the small seeds inside the pomegranate fruit, a fruit that has been treasured for thousands of years across the Mediterranean, the Middle East and South Asia. It takes a remarkable amount of fruit to produce a relatively small amount of oil, making pomegranate seed oil a particularly concentrated and precious botanical ingredient.
The oil has a distinctive composition, with a high proportion of punicic acid, an unusual fatty acid that sets it apart from many other plant oils. This makes it especially interesting to us as formulators, where we look for oils with different fatty acid profiles and complementary properties.
Pomegranate seed oil benefits for skin
Pomegranate seed oil is particularly rich in punicic acid, an omega-5 fatty acid, along with naturally occurring antioxidants. These compounds help protect the skin from everyday environmental stress while supporting a healthy-looking, resilient complexion.
It is a nourishing oil that helps replenish and retain moisture, leaving skin feeling soft, supple and comfortable. Its antioxidant-rich profile makes it especially well suited to formulations for dry, dull or mature skin, where nourishment and protection are important.
With regular use, pomegranate seed oil can help skin look smoother and more radiant. It pairs beautifully with other botanical oils, allowing us to create facial oils and serums with a broad range of fatty acids and plant compounds.
How to use pomegranate seed oil
Pomegranate seed oil can be applied directly to the skin or blended with other plant oils. A few drops can be pressed into slightly damp skin after cleansing, either on its own or underneath a moisturizer.
Because it is such a concentrated and distinctive oil, it is also well suited to facial serums and other formulations where a small amount can contribute significant nourishment.
Pomegranate seed oil in Twigroot skin care
Pomegranate seed oil is one of those ingredients we return to when we want to bring concentrated antioxidant nourishment to a formula. Its unusual fatty acid profile makes it an especially valuable partner to the other cold-pressed botanical oils we use.
It brings antioxidant-rich nourishment to our Radiance Antioxidant Serum and Magus Serum, where it works alongside other berry and botanical seed oils to create rich, restorative facial treatments.
For overnight care, pomegranate seed oil helps nourish dry or mature skin in our Hydrating Night Cream and Night Balm. You’ll also find it in our Shinrin Yoku Body Oil, where it contributes to a nourishing blend of botanical oils for the body.
Pomegranate seed oil is a beautiful example of why we love working with plant oils. Each one has its own character and fatty acid profile, and combining them thoughtfully allows us to create formulas that feel nourishing, balanced and genuinely enjoyable to use.
